Bearcats: 2012 Nebraska Class B State Champions

LINCOLN - The Scottsbluff boys basketball team surprised many in Lincoln Saturday as they upset top seed S. Sioux City, 64-61 to win the Class B state title.

The Bearcats trailed by four at the half to the defending champions, but they kept fighting just like they have all tournament. South Sioux City never quit either and kept it exciting to the buzzer hitting a shot from half court to make the final 64-61 after coming back from 14 down.

The Bearcats certainly know how to finish, defeating three of the best teams in the state by a total of seven points.

"It was a complete team effort, like it always is," said coach Siske.

It's been 57 years since Scottsbluff last won the boys basketball state title when they defeated Creighton Prep 63-61. However, the state tournament is not new to Scottsbluff. The Bearcat boys have a whopping 35 total trips to the capital city and have made it four out of the last six years, just missing the title in 2009 to conference rival Sidney who has 38 trips. Gering qualified for the state tournament for their 27th time this year but fell to Omaha Gross in the first round.

Everyone from the band to the drill team and cheerleaders, fans, coaches and players can rightfully celebrate this Scottsbluff victory for western Nebraska.

Hometown Family Radio has announced that there is a welcome party forming at Frank Implement at 4:45 Sunday afternoon to escort the team into town. You can meet there or in the east parking lot of the High School. The presentation will take place in the auditorium and will be broadcast on all their stations.
