Clemens, Greene lead all-star victories

Ron Brillhart Court at Western Nebraska Community College’s Cougar Palace has served as the stage for many an achievement for the Scottsbluff boys’ basketball team the past two years.

For three graduated Bearcats, it will be their home court when they play for the Cougars next winter. And they stood out Saturday night in sort of a transition from high school to college in the boys’ 18th annual Panhandle Prep all-star game.

Zach Clemens led the Red team to a 99-80 victory with 22 points, garnered MVP honors and won the slam dunk competition on the court where Scottsbluff won its second straight district title in March on its way to winning the Class B state championship.

Fellow former Bearcats, and soon to be teammates again with the Cougars, Isaiah Castellaw and Rich Williams played on the Blue team.
Williams led all scorers with 26 points with three 3-pointers, while Castellaw followed with 20 points and one trey.

Gering’s Zach Smith, who had many battles of the Zachs with Clemens the past three years, teamed with Clemens on the Red team and had 11 points.

In between the two Zachs, Gordon-Rushville’s Kalen Coats had 19 points and Mitchell’s Alberto Alvizar added 13. Gering’s Dillon Wademan added two points.

In wearing familiar Gering blue, Bulldog graduate Tyler Wallace had four points and Nate Marquez did not score. Banner County’s Jordan Knaub added three points on the Blue team.

Ogallala’s Garrett Folchert won the 3-point shootout by hitting 14 treys to beat out Smith and Alliance’s Kyle Sanders, who each had 12.

Greene leads girls’ game
Gering graduate Morgan Greene will also play on Ron Brillhart Court this fall, as a member of the Lady Cougar volleyball team. In one final basketball game, however, she garnered MVP honors in leading the Red team to a 59-57 victory.

Greene thus joined her brother Nate as a Panhandle Prep All-Star MVP after he won the honor, and also the 3-point competition, in 2007.
The Red had three players score in double figures. After Greene’s 13 points, Garden County’s Tori Vineyard followed with 12 and Sidney’s Leah Uhlir added 10.

Former Gering teammate Bryana Larsen, who will play basketball at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington, added eight points, while Mitchell’s Andee Grentz did not score.

For the Blue team, which led 27-24 at halftime, Gering’s Morgan Broussard and Bridgeport’s Ashley Stevens each had a team-high 12 points.

Other area players who played on the Blue team were Kerissa Mitchell of Gering with five points, Morgan Yost of Scottsbluff with three and Banner County’s Jessica Bruce and Lindsey Soule with two each.
Stevens, who will play at WNCC next year, also won the girls’ 3-point shooting contest with 13 treys, ahead of Yost with nine.
