Bearcat girls win back-to-back games to open the new year
     2011-01-13      By Terry Gaston
After finishing with two losses in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Holiday Tournament in late December, the Scottsbluff girls’ basketball team opened its 2011 schedule last week with a pair of lopsided victories on Thursday and Friday night.
Scottsbluff opened the New Year’s schedule Thursday with a 55-22 taming of Ogallala, and the Bearcats (8-3) finished the two-night flurry with a 52-31 rocking of Alliance at the SHS gym.
The Bearcats warmed up to 2011 in a hurry, breaking out to a 13-4 first-quarter lead at Ogallala. They did even better in the second quarter with an 18-4 run for a 31-8 halftime advantage. Ogallala (1-8) could not muster any kind of comeback after Scottsbluff posted a 14-5 third-quarter run to fall behind 45-13.
Senior Hattie Guzman led the Bearcats with 12 points, while classmate Makayla Westphal was joined at 11 points by sophomore Zoey Rada.
The Bearcats were 17-for-27 at the free-throw line, while the Indians were just 6-for-17 from the stripe.
Against Alliance, which at 2-8 is still trying to rebound after the graduation of now Nebraska freshman standout Jordan Hooper, Scottsbluff bolted to a 16-7 halftime lead and built the advantage to 33-16 at halftime. The Bearcats were outscored 8-4 during the third quarter but rode a 15-7 final-period run to the 21-point victory.
Guzman led the Bearcats’ victory with 15 points and Westphal followed with 10.
The Bearcats began this week’s action, with both games on the road, Tuesday night against archrival Gering.
Scottsbluff then travels to Cheyenne to face Central on Friday. The Bearcats then return home to play Sidney on Jan. 22.
