Gering falls to tough Helena team
     2012-06-20      By Brian Hale
Despite a great effort by Danny O'Boyle, Gering Platte Valley Companies lost 5-2 in seven innings at Gering on Tuesday to a Helena, Mont.

The team from big sky country had requested the game with Gering since they were passing through the area and had an open date and the seniors obliged. The Senators are headed to the 2012 Battle of Omaha tournament Jun. 21-13.

The Gering squad had a chance to visit Omaha at the best time of the year; during the college world series. The team's schedule worked out so that they had the opportunity to attend games of all this years teams. However, the joy of viewing the college world series first-hand did not come without having to endure triple-digit heat in the new TD Ameritrade Stadium in Omaha.

Tuesday night, it was Gering's Oregon Trail Park that played host to the game matching up the visiting Helena Senators with the Gering PVC Seniors. Gering was sitting at 13-11 prior to this game, while Helena was sporting a similar record of 18-17 on the year.

Gering is hitting well as a team on the year, but has struggled recently with putting together enough offense to score more than one run at a time in recent games. This night was no exeption as Helena went up for good in the first, scoring a run on an RBI double by Dan Hansen. Helena increased its lead with four runs in the fifth and that was too much for the seniors to overcome.

O'Boyle got on base three times in the game for Gering Platte Valley Companies with a walk and singles in the third and fifth innings. Walker Britsch went 1-2 with an RBI and Grant Rimington added another run batted in with his 2-3 showing at the plate. Nate Marquez, Reggie Reyes and Sean Holthus also had a hit apiece in the contest.

Zach Smith went the distance on the mound in the loss for Gering, giving up five runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out four. And Helena's Joe Spradlin did something that only one other team has done this year, and that's keep Smith hitless. Gering PVC's clutch hitter went 0-4 on the night, while Spradlin recorded the win for Helena. He allowed one run on six hits over five innings while striking out one and walking two.

One run in the bottom of the fifth helped Gering Platte Valley Companies close its deficit to 5-1. An RBI single by Grant Rimington sparked Gering Platte Valley Companies' rally but, Spradlin got Smith to to end the inning. Then, after getting one run in the bottom of the sixth, Gering Platte Valley Companies faced just a 5-2 deficit. An RBI single by Walker Britsch fueled Gering Platte Valley Companies' atttempt at a comeback but it just wasn't enough to produce more than single run, a common theme lately for the seniors. They were able to string out eight hits, the same as Helena, and Gering only struck out twice the whole game, but when you can’t put it all together, you can’t get the run production you need.

The loss puts Gering Platte Valley Companies at 13-12 on the season. The Seniors are 3-1 in league play. Next Tuesday night has Buckley coming to town for a 7 p.m. league matchup at Oregon Trail Park. Before that, Gering PVC is on the road as they travel to Torrington, Wyo. for a single game, then to Ft. Morgan, Colo. for a doubleheader Jun. 21 and then another doubleheader at Casper, Wyo. on Jun. 23.
