Former Huskers share football knowledge

Bearcat Stadium was filled with future Huskers for the 2012 Panhandle Football Camp. This is the fourth year for the camp; organized by Scottsbluff resident Ralph Paez. The hot weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the campers with 126 children signed up for this year’s camp. The two-day camp teaches kids the fundamentals of football with the assistance of former Nebraska Husker football players.

Inspiration for the camp came after Paez met with former Husker player Tommie Frazier. “We hit it off and he became my connection to the different guys on the team,” said Paez. After that meeting, Paez started networking to see if others would be interested in participating in the camp.

This year’s camp featured former Green Bay Packer Steve Warren, former Washington Redskin Jamel Williams, Marlon Luckey, former Cincinnati Bengal; Octavious Mcfarlin, Dwayne Harris, Keith Mercer and former New York Jet Raymonn Adams.

The first lesson was teaching campers about the offensive line. They learned the roles of receivers, running backs and quarterbacks.
Later, they switched to learning the fundamentals of the defensive line like the role of linebackers. Each individual group had a former Husker that worked with them. Also there to assist were 12 to 15 volunteer coaches from around the area.
