Big bats, great defense life Gering over Oshkosh
     2012-07-19      By Brian Hale
For those following the Gering Platte Valley Companies team this year, these final games of the season may have felt like a warm-up in preparation for the Class B, Area 7 tournament that begins Friday in Ogallala. It did serve that purpose well, as several Gering PVC 36ers fine-tuned their skills, both at bat and on defense.

However, for recent Bayard graduate Ethan McDaniel, it was much more than that. It was clearly his best full outing of the year as he picked up the complete game victory over Oshkosh Sunday night. The lefty threw all 7 innings, striking out eight while scattering seven hits. It was McDaniel’s only complete game in his legion career and one he worked hard to get.

Oshkosh drew first blood by scoring a run in the bottom of the first stanza, in front of their home crow; however, it didn’t take Gering long to overcome the one run deficit as they evened it up the very next half inning.

Danny O’Boyle had a big game at the plate, tallying his first homerun of the season with a blast over the left field fence at the top of the third inning. Collin Chatterton followed with a base hit, and Josh Burgener scored on one of the five errors committed by Oshkosh of the night. Chatterton came home, scoring on Austin Ferguson’s RBI single. When the dust settled, Gering held a 5-1 advantage after two and a half innings of play.

O’Boyle later added two more hits to go along with the homer, giving him a solid 3-for-5 from the plate with two RBI and two runs. Rimington went 2-for-3 and scored three times, and teammate Ferguson added another run and two RBI on a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Chatterton also scored twice on his two-hit night.

Oshkosh could only muster one run in the bottom half of the third on a wild pitch when Devon Sullivan came around to score. But the 36ers weren’t done. They kept the hitting machine going with doubles cranked out by Zach Smith and O’Boyle and a sacrifice fly by Reggie Reyes totaled three more for Gering, making it 8-2. It was starting to look like the game was well in hand.

Grant Rimington’s homerun in the fifth inning with two down and Nate Marquez’ RBI triple in the final stanza, scoring Ferguson made it 10-2 Gering PVC. Oshkosh fought hard but McDaniel stifled any notion of a comeback with two K’s to end the game.

Gering will finish the regular season with round robin play againt Gillette and Wheatland, Wyo. on the road before heading in to the Class B, Area 7 tournament on Friday.
