Weiner Dog Races put a smile on every face

Weiner dogs will race at Scotts Bluff County Fair for the 7th year in row. “Usually we have about 50-60 dogs participating,” said organizer Mary Lou Shields. “The track doesn’t have any confinement per dog so they can go forward to the other person, they can go back, play with each other, jump over the little fence, You never know what’s going to happen,” she chuckled.
The top dog will win a $100 gift certificate from Walmart. The second place winner receives a $50 cash certificate from Wells Fargo advisors, third is a ceramic stagecoach filled with dog bones, also donated by Wells Fargo advisors. Each dog participating will also receive a toy.
There is no charge for the dogs to enter. “I would like for people to come and enter and they don’t have to pay anything. It’s just for fun.” Dogs in the race must be on leash before and after the races. Each dog must be accompanied by two humans, one at the start of the race and one at the finish line. Dachshunds must be purebred in order to qualify.
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and continues until 12:30 p.m.The parade of dogs and owners begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Races begin shortly after the parade at the baseball field next to the fairgrounds.
Sheilds cautioned,“It’s going to be hot so please bring water for your dogs.” Audience members are encouraged to bring chairs and anything that helps them to stay cool and comfortable.
