Wildcat leaders ready to step up

Coming off a 1-7 record in 2011, the Banner County football team returns all but two players and plan to make a bigger impact in their conference this season.
Third year coach Kenny Stauffer said he’s seeing some good things from early team practices. “I’m seeing a lot more leadership this year than I’ve seen in the past,” he said. “A lot of them are stepping up and want to be leaders on the team. They’re starting out with a really good attitude and it’s a lot different team than we’ve had the last two years.”
The Wildcats only lost two players last year. One freshman has joined the team as well as a junior who decided to go out for the first time.
“The team has set a goal to finish with a .500 record for the season,” he said. “They’d also like to make a playoff game. They’ve taken it on themselves to go 110 percent on every play, no matter what the score is.”
Stauffer pointed out that Garden County and Sedgewick County, Colo. are perhaps the toughest opponents they’ll face this season. But their first game comes up on Aug. 31 when the Wildcats are on the road to face the Morrill Lions.
“We’re pretty excited about that game,” Stauffer said. “This is Morrill’s first year in 8-man and they’re excited to play a bigger school. It’s going to be a fun game.”
