Mitchell Tigers to expand attack, size up defense
     2012-08-23      By Terry Gaston
With senior quarterback Brendan Swanson returning after having a year’s experience under his belt, the Mitchell Tigers football team will turn from a primary run-based attack, which struggled down the stretch of last year’s 3-5 season, into a more balanced and open offensive attack.
“The kids are playing hard and we look a lot better than last year,” second-year Mitchell coach Chris Bailey said. “I think we will surprise some people. We have two backs that are young and a quarterback who can throw. He is throwing a little bit better, and he can run as well.”
Swanson (6 feet, 195 pounds) will have help up front from returning linemen Trey Sterkel (6-foot, 195-pound junior) and seniors Spencer Rien (6-0, 230), Austin Wright (6-0, 250), Nick Harriger (6-0, 205) and Tristan Robles.
In the backfield behind Swanson will be juniors Adam Schlotthauer (6-0, 175), Colton Snyder (6-0, 165) and Josh Zulkoski (5-11, 145). Receivers include junior tight end Bo McVey (6-0, 165).
Defensively, linemen include Rien, Harriger, Robles and Wright. In the linebacker corps are Sterkel, Schlotthauer and Snyder, while in the secondary will be McVey and Zulkoski at the corners and Swanson at free safety.
“And our defense looks a lot better,” said Bailey, whose Tigers started last season 3-1 but went winless in its four Class C1 district games after the defense allowed 39 points or more in its defeats. “We just need to do a lot of the little things right, and I think this will progress.”
