Gering girls keep growing, win third straight
     2011-02-03      By Terry Gaston
With the Class B district playoffs just three weeks away, the young Gering girls' basketball team has found a way to its growth and early-season struggles into a three-game winning streak entering this week.
The visiting Bulldogs led Alliance by two points after three quarters Friday night but turned on the power in the fourth period to roll past the host Bulldogs 46-31.
“We're feeling good about where we're at,” said Gering coach Adam Freeburg, whose team (7-9 before Tuesday's visit to Ogallala) has responded to its 1-7 drought before its three straight wins. “Hopefully we can keep the winning streak going.”
Gering kept the streak alive thanks to a 17-4 fourth-quarter run to top Alliance.
Asked what he thought was the game's difference, Freeburg said, “Hopefully it was us. It was one of those games where you had to grind it out. We got the shots to go our way and played some great defense to finish it out.”
Junior Morgan Greene fueled the Bulldogs' victory with 16 points and six rebounds. Junior Morgan Broussard, senior Jordan Plummer and sophomore Megan Upp followed with seven points apiece, while Broussard also had four assists and three steals.; Junior Bryana Larsen led Gering in rebounds with seven.
After Gering traveled to Ogallala on Tuesday, the Bulldogs go to Sidney on Friday for their final regular-season action outside Scotts Bluff County. Next week, Gering will play host to Lexington on Thursday, MeCook on Friday and North Platte on Saturday in the East-West Shoot-Out.
The Bulldogs finish the regular season against Scottsbluff at Western Nebraska Community College on Feb. 18, then district action begins Feb. 22 and contiues through Feb. 25.
