SCOTTSBLUFF – While recent Gering High School graduate Santanna Mitchell will attend Western Nebraska Community College in the fall, her athletic activities in representing the Bulldogs came to an end with All-Star appearances at Cougar Palace the past two Saturdays.
Mitchell’s competitive athletic career came to an end in the 29th annual West Nebraska East-West All-Star Volleyball Match a week after she scored four points for the winning Blue team in the Panhandle Prep All-Star Game on May 25.

The West won the volleyball match’s first game 25-22, but the East won a hard-fought second set 27-25 to even the match and rode that momentum to wins in the remaining three sets, 25-19, 25-15 and 15-10 for the 4-1 match victory.

Mitchell had seven digs, five kills and five service points for the West.
“I had a good time,” said Mitchell, who had three of her kills in the fourth set. “It was really fun and a good experience.”
Any difference, besides the basketball game ending in victory for Mitchell but the volleyball match result a loss?

“They were equal,” she said. “They’re totally different games with different levels of play.”
East MVP Samantha Kennedy had team-highs of eight kills and three blocks, while also making 10 service points, four digs and one service ace. Kennedy will continue her volleyball career at Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte.

East Libero Brook Boucher of North Platte St. Patrick’s led all servers with 20 points and had a team-high 14 assists with six digs, while East teammate Taylor Sandoe of Medicine Valley had a team-high nine digs with 11 service points and five kills.

Two other Scotts Bluff County graduates added their talents to the West’s effort.
Mitchell’s Chalsey Grentz, the Most Valuable Player of the Panhandle Prep All-Star Basketball Game with 16 points for the winning Blue team, was the Libero for the West and had a match-leading 26 assists with three assists and one kill.

Grentz will continue her athletic career on Ron Brillhart Court at WNCC, playing basketball for the Cougars. She plans to study elementary education or criminal justice at WNCC.
Scottsbluff’s Brayden Auer added four kills and two digs with five service points for the West. Auer will play volleyball at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., where she will major in agriculture communications.

Other West statistical leaders included three Cheyenne County products.
West MVP Kali Robb of Sidney had match-highs of 15 kills and 12 digs, along with nine service points and a team-high two blocked shots. Robb will attend Concordia University in Seward, where she plans to major in physical therapy and participate in track and field.

Sidney’s Madi Malzahn had a match-high 19 assists, while Conner Wolff of Potter-Dix led West servers with 12 points. Chadron’s Ashlyn Eitemiller led all servers with two aces.
“It was still fun,” Mitchell said of the time spent with former opponents in spite of the match loss. “I played against all them all year, so it was fun playing with them. Kali Robb was willing to give it her all, but we all did great.”

Mitchell plans to major in secondary education at WNCC and will likely participate in intramurals.
But her competitive athletic career is over. “No sports,” she said. “I’m done.”
