Former Lady Husker assists with volleyball camp

Brooke Delano, star middle blocker for the Lady Huskers volleyball team, was in Gering this week to help coach Craig Schadwinkle’s All-American Volleyball Camp.

Delano, from Bellevue West High School in Omaha, graduated from the Huskers team in 2011. She then played professionally in Puerto Rico and in Europe for two seasons. She’s now a volunteer assistant with the Lady Huskers.

“I travel around the state coaching volleyball camps and have worked with the VC Nebraska coaching program,” she said. “I tore up my shoulder again in my last year of playing, so it’s time to hang up the jersey. But there is life after volleyball.”

All of Delano’s family lives in Omaha and she said family is what she missed the most while playing overseas. But she’s grateful for the opportunity to travel the world and experience other cultures.

“For the next year at least, I’ll keep doing volleyball camps and get into coaching at the college level in the future,” she said. “I’m glad to be settled in and not have to move again anytime soon.”

She added it’s a great experience to pass along what she learned under Coach John Cook at Nebraska – to teach other young girls to believe in themselves and dream big. Although the Lady Husker players are seen as “rock stars” across the state, Delano said she’s just like everyone else and likes being her goofy self while working with and relating to young players.

“I learned so many things both on and off the court while I was playing at Nebraska,” she said. “I can take those lessons into life as I continue to grow. I thank Coach Cook for helping to mold me into a great overall person. He set us all up for so many great things.”

She described the team dynamic as like being in a dating relationship where members see each other every day. And that grew into great relationships for all of them.

“Jordan Willberger from Scottsbluff was my freshman roommate,” Delano said. “We’d both argue and be best friends like sisters. She’s just a great person.”
