Zephyrs split doubleheader at Ogallala

The Westco Zephyrs' Ty Benson rounds third base, as Gering Legion 36er Taylor Winkler stands ready for the play during last week's contest at Gering.
The Westco Zephyrs American Legion baseball team earned a split of a Saturday doubleheader at Ogallala with a 2-1, second-game victory.
Right-hander Eric Moreno (4-1), who earlier in the week posted a one-hit, eight-inning complete-game 2-0 shutout over the Gering Platte Valley Companies Post 36 Seniors, struck out eight Ogallala batters on his way to a six-hit victory.

Ogallala scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning and maintained the lead until the seventh inning, when Robbie Cantril began Westco’s rally from behind with a one-out single. Ty Benson drove home Cantril on a sacrifice fly to tie the score.

Tharyn Curtis reached first base on an infield single that put Rojelio Gurrola at third. Ty Dunkel was then hit by a pitch that loaded the bases for the Zephyrs, and Gurrola scored the go-ahead run when Jacob Schmid also was hit by a pitch.
Beau Lofink had two hits for Westco in leading its six-hit offensive effort.

Ogallala won Saturday’s first game, 5-4, although Westco struck first with two first-inning runs when Schmid drove home Curtis and Dunkel. Benson hit a one-out single in the second inning to plate Ty Wilson for a 3-0 Zephyrs lead.

Ogallala answered with a game-tying rally in the bottom of the third and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Moreno drove home Curtis for the Zephyrs’ game-tying run in the fifth inning, but Ogallala scored in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead for good.

In outhitting Ogallala 9-8, Westco got two hits apiece from Curtis, Moreno and Cantril. Schmid drove in two runs, while Dunkel had a double and one run.
Leighton Freeze took the pitching loss for the Zephyrs although he gave up just two runs on four hits wit one strikeout in three innings. Freeze took over for Lofink, who allowed Ogallala’s first three runs on three hits with three strikeouts, after Lofink was hit on the elbow by a line drive.

The doubleheader followed a 9-1 loss at Alliance on Wednesday, a game in which Curtis was 3-for-3 with one walk in leading Westco’s five-hit effort. The host Spartans outhit the Zephyrs 9-5.
Westco spoiled the Alliance shutout in the seventh inning when Dylon Busskohl scored on Ty Dunkel’s fielder’s choice.

Gurrola was the losing pitcher after allowing eight runs (all earned) and seven hits in 4-1/3 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Wilson had four strikeouts and allowed one earned run on two hits in going 1-2/3 innings.

The Zephyrs, 14-9 after last week’s action, were to travel Wednesday for a doubleheader against the North Platte First Nationals. Westco then travels to Wheatland, Wyo., for twin-bill action Thursday starting at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, the Zephyrs will play a home twin bill at Cleveland Field, facing Fort Collins Poudre Valley at 4:30 p.m. and Gering PVC at 7 p.m.
