The Westco Zephyrs senior American Legion Class A baseball team continued to pile up the victories with a 7-3 road win on July 1 against Laramie. That extended the Zephyrs record to 23-11 for the season.
Zephyrs ace pitcher, Eric Moreno, turned in another stellar performance. He pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing only two earned runs and walking one while striking out nine batters.

The win extends his record to 6-1. Moreno will play baseball this fall at Lamar Community College in Colorado.
The game against Laramie was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but was scaled back to a single game due to bad weather.

The first two innings were scoreless, but the Zephyrs took the lead in the third with three runs. After five innings, their lead extended to 5-1 and 7-1 in the seventh. Laramie tried to make a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but that was all the offense they had.

The Zephyrs’ Ty Dunkel went 3-for-5 in the game, scoring one run, one double and two singles while adding two runs batted in. Ty Benson went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. And Beau Lofink went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.

July 3 was Fan Appreciation Night at Cleveland Field as the Alliance Spartans were in town to take on the Zephyrs. And it was Eric Moreno who got the team off to a strong start by blasting a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, his first of the season.
The 7-1 win over Alliance was the third in a row for the Zephyrs. Their season record improved to 24-11as the team prepares to host the Class A, Area 7 Tournament July 19 – 23.

Alliance was able to only put one run on the board. Andrew Garza hit a line drive single in the top of the fourth to bring in Jayden Holman. Holman finished the night at 2-for-3 with four runs batted in and a run scored.

Zephyrs Pitcher Ty Benson picked up his third win of the season, giving up one run on five hits while posting five strikeouts in the first five innings.

Moreno went 2-for-3 on the night with a run scored and four runs batted in. Ty Dunkel was 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. And Beau Lofink was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Zephyrs continued to roll, hosting the Walmart Tournament July 5 – 7. Eric Moreno was on the mound Friday against Cody, Wyo. He allowed two hits in seven innings as his team blanked Cody 4 – 0.

All four Zephyr runs came early as second baseman Ty Wilson’s double brought in Ty Benson and Tharyn Curtis in the bottom of the first inning.
In the second inning, a centerfield single by Ty Dunkel scored Jacob Schmid and Ty Benson. After that, the Zephyr defense held.
Schmid led the team at the plate, scoring one run and going 3-for-3. Dunkel and Wilson each had two RBIs. And on the mound, Moreno recorded 11 strikeouts whole walking just two Cody batters.
Saturday’s schedule in the Walmart Tournament had the Zephyrs in two games against Douglas, Wyo. in the afternoon and the Buckley Bombers out of Chappell that evening.

The Zephyrs beat Douglas 5 – 3 but needed to rally late in the game to get it done. Douglas was ahead 1 – 0 in the first inning and extended their lead to 3 – 1 after two. The last four of the Zephyrs runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Stats from the game showed the Zephyrs had six hits to nine hits for Douglas. But teams had one error.

Brad Lofink led the Zephyrs, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Also posting hits for Westco were Ty Dunkel, Ty Wilson, Austin Murphy and Robbie Cantril.

Leighton Freeze took the win at the mound, throwing six innings while striking our five and allowing only one walk.
In the evening game, Westco went up 2 – 1 over Buckley in the first inning. By the third, it was 4 – 1. With a final run in the fifth, the Zephyrs topped Buckley 5 – 1.

Brad Lofink was the pitcher, going seven innings while striking out 11. Posting hits for the Zephyrs were Tharyn Curtis, Eric Moreno, Ty Wilson, Ty Dunkel and Leighton Freeze.

Westco completed the Walmart Tournament unbeaten with a Sunday night 13 – 0 win over Roosevelt, a team from Colorado.

The game, which only lasted five innings and stretched the Zephyrs win streak to seven with a season record of 28 – 11. Westco put the game away in the second inning, scoring nine runs while sending 19 batters to the plate.

Dylon Busskohl pitched the entire game, allowing only two hits and extending his record to 4 – 3.
The Zephyrs hosted Laramie on Tuesday night, handing the Rangers a doubleheader sweep, 5-0 and 11-2.

Eric Moreno was almost perfect from the mound in the opener, firing a one-hitter and striking out 13 for his ninth win of the season.
Westco got its first points in the third inning with three runs. They added another in both the fifth and sixth innings to wrap up the scoring.

The Zephyrs unbeaten pitcher Ty Benson started on the mound for the second game. Laramie went up early with a first inning run on two hits, but the Zephyrs came back with two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. They posted four-run innings in both the third and fourth. Benson moved to 4-0 and Westco improved its record to 30-11 with a nine-game winning streak.

The Zephyrs wrap up their season this weekend in Colorado. Then they’re back at home on July 19 to host the Area Tournament as the top seed.
