Winning Deter Dynasty team had pair with links to legendary coach

Two former wrestlers under long-time Gering wrestling coach Chuck Deter were part of the winning team in the second Deter Dynasty golf scramble Friday at Monument Shadows Golf Course.
The event, conducted for the first time since the inaugural event in 2008, had 32 teams participate in the fundraiser for the Gering Wrestling Club.

The winning team, which turned in a low scramble score of 18-under par, included two former Gering wrestlers in Trevor Neumann and Eric Wilcox, both of whom still live in Gering. Marc Clemens and Dave Harnish — the Western Nebraska Community College women‘s basketball coach — of Scottsbluff completed the winning foursome.

“He was a great mentor and taught me a lot,” Wilcox said of Deter, who played in the scramble as well. “His family are really nice people. I had Gretchen (Deter’s wife) as a teacher and I graduated with Allison (in 1990). He was also a great athletic director.”

Wilcox wrestled for Deter as a freshman, while Neumann — a 1989 Gering graduate — wrestled for the Gering wrestling programs from 1976 through 1988 until an injury sidelined him for his senior season.

Neumann said while never making the Nebraska School Activities Association state tournament, he made state in federation and freestyle tournaments that were also led by Deter.

Neumann said his most vivid memory of Deter was when the coach would take on the Bulldogs’ upper-weight wrestlers, including being the practice partner for 1988 Class A state heavyweight champion Roger Horst.

“He would wrestle with Horst, tie him up and then ask him, ‘Now what are you going to do?’” Neumann recalled. “Then Roger would respond, and what happened next depended on how Roger responded. He was an amazing coach, the best wrestling partner for the upper-weight guys.”
The second-place team in the scramble, with a 15-under score, was the mixed group of the Gross family, led by Kip Gross, who was a standout pitcher on the Gering Senior Legion’s 1982 state championship team and later pitched in the major leagues, including a stint with the 1990 World Series champion Cincinnati Reds.

Rounding out the Gross quartet were Kevin Gross, Dennis Gross and Amanda Gross.
The third-place team, at 13-under, was the foursome of Wayne Mitchell, Bill Hicks, Dave Lashley and Jody Miles.

The top women’s team, with a score of 10-under, had Geringites Wendy Goos, Jessica Boswell and Stacy Mitchell and WNCC softball coach Maria Winn-Ratliff of Scottsbluff.
During the awards ceremony, J.J. Behrens, Gering’s new head wrestling coach after spending the past two seasons as a Bulldogs assistant coach, welcomed the former wrestlers back to Gering and thanked them for welcoming him into the Deter Dynasty family.

Behrens said the current Bulldogs have been participating in numerous camps this summer, getting home from Kearney late Thursday night before the scramble, and with one more camp this week he said the team’s goal is to get in 600 matches.
