Jessica Boswell, a 2002 Gering graduate as Jessica Nemnich, is the new girls’ golf coach at Gering High School – and she’s looking forward to her first season.

“Practices are good so far,” Boswell said. “The girls are excited to be on the course again. I have two juniors and two seniors who will make up most of the varsity team.”

Returning team members include junior Sam Rahmig, who finished 15th
last year in the Class B state tournament. Seniors Amber Fertig and Kendall Bayne, as well as junior Ahslyn Schultz, also return.
“Two of our players consistently shoot in the 80s and two others are most likely in the lower 90s,” Boswell said. “We haven’t played enough yet for me to decide who will be the fifth varsity player, but I’ll know by our first tournament.”

The team has five varsity players and four junior varsity players. Some of their tournaments are for both varsity and JV, so the entire team will participate.

“The team has a good work ethic this year,” she said. “They’re willing to do whatever’s needed to improve their games.”
Boswell added that Sam Rahmig put in a lot of time golfing over the summer and should be close to breaking into the 70s this season. Their ultimate goal is to qualify the entire team for the state tournament.

Boswell was a standout golfer during her high school years at Gering. “It’ve been getting to know the girls and help them improve their games with what I’ve learned over the years,” she said.
The Gering girls’ golf team opens on the road with a trip to Sidney on Aug. 27, then returning to Sidney on Aug. 30 for the Western Conference tournament.
