The Gering boys’ tennis team, now in its second year as a school sport, is still looking to compete well in every match they play.
“We had an awesome year in our first year,” said Coach Matt Palomo. “We went four and three in duals and the kids improved a lot over the year.”

Palomo said the team should have another great year as even during the first week of practice, players are excited about representing their school and really enjoying the game.

One senior from last year’s squad graduated, but eight players are returning. Two new sophomores and two new freshmen are also coming out. Palomo said it will be a challenge to schedule all 12 players, but they should build up the team.

“We look forward to every match because every match is big for us,” Palomo said. “They’re stepping stones to what we want to do and how we want to develop the program.”

He added that so far, everyone’s morale is great because the players love the sport and know they’re part of a good team.
The boys’ tennis team opens on Aug. 29 with a triangular at Alliance with Scottsbluff.
