Lady Bulldogs ready for district softball action

Gering’s Isabel Wolf steals third during an Alliance contest at home earlier this season. The Lady Bulldogs will match up against Alliance again next Tuesday.
The Gering Bulldog softball team trekked to North Platte last weekend to contend against Chadron, North Platte and Scottsbluff in the North Platte Invite. The Bulldogs came out with two wins and one loss against North Platte.

In the Gering versus Scottsbluff match, Haylee Duyck led the Bulldogs in defense, pitching four out of the five innings. Duyck came out of the game with a total of nine strikeouts. Jacey Marietta pitched one inning for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs also engaged Scottsbluff last Thursday in Gering’s last home game of the season. Gering glided past Scottsbluff to a 13-1 win. The Bulldog’s junior varsity team was defeated by the Bearcats.

Chadron also fell to the Bulldogs on Saturday. The game ended 8-2 after six innings. Mikayla Butler pitched six strikeouts during the game against Scottsbluff pitchers Denea Ray and Alex Menke who pitched two strikeouts each.

North Platte slid past Gering to a 7-6 win after five innings. Alexa Longoria pitched for the Bulldogs and threw three strikeouts, while Jenny Keck steered North Platte with six total strikeouts. Butler and Keck also drove their teams in offense, each hitting a home run.

Gering plays today (Thursday) at Ogallala against Southern Valley and Cozad. Their next game will be Tuesday at Alliance. District action begins Thursday, Oct. 10.

Gering’s head softball coach Molly Bonuchi thinks that the team has improved a lot over the season in preparation for district action.

“I think we’re ready as much as we can be ready. We have to be mentally tough enough to compete at that level,” she said.

Seniors for the Bulldogs are Shelby Schanaman, Alexa Longoria, and Isabel Wolf. “The seniors this year have had a huge impact on the team; more so this year than in years past. All of them have been out for the past four years, and all of them have greatly improved.

We are going to miss their leadership skills. They are just a great group of individuals to have coached,” Bonuchi said.
