Gering eighth grader Xavier Arellano won the Junior High State Cross Country Meet in LaVista on Oct. 12, with a meet record time of 10 minutes 12 seconds. This broke the previous meet record of 10:55. The race was against 141 fellow seventh and eighth grade runners for a distance of 3000 meters. When asked what it takes to earn a win like this, Arellano said “Natural talent plus a good coach like Rick Marez.”

Gering Cross Country coach Rick Marez said that Arellano makes a good point with the talent but says that Arellano is a bit different than the guys around. Arellano said he has been running since last year and really much before that.

Marez stressed that talent is not enough. Runners must be dedicated and enjoy running but many don’t like to run. Marez said that Arellano asks to do a little bit more and runs with the older high school guys. “There are some of the workouts where he could just stop; he chooses to do a little bit extra,” said Marez. Marez observes that Arellano likes the challenge, something he doesn’t see very often. “That is what makes a champion,” said Marez.

With Arellano being in the eighth grade, we are sure to see a lot more of him in the future.
