The Gering Lady Bulldogs volleyball team closed off its season with the annual banquet and awards. Attended by both players and parents, the annual meal is a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of the season and say goodbye to the seniors that won’t be back next year. There are four volleyball seniors this year: Katie O’Boyle, Savannah Walker, Kelsea Prieels and Aubrey Gonzales.

Gering’s season ended with an overall record of 16-19 and a district record of 5-3. Gering managed to make it to the sub state match at Grand Island Northwest where they played the last game of the season falling to the Vikings in three sets.

It was a year of significant change for Gering volleyball when longtime varsity coach Craig Schadwinkle was abruptly replaced midseason with junior varsity coach Stevie Gable. Shelly Revelle was moved into the junior varsity coach position. Coach Gable said “The season was a good one. The girls responded to a difficult situation in the beginning of the season in a very positive manner. I’m pleased with the way the girls fought hard, persevered and played for the love of the game.”

Varsity letter winners are: Kelsea Prieels, Katie O’Boyle, Savannah Walker, Aubrey Gonzales, Kaila Borgman, Brooklyn Perez, Kaylee Spreier, Allie Boggs, Abby Kiesel and Jade Riedel.

Kaylee Spreier was named to the Twin Cities All-Tourney Team. Spreier and Savannah Walker were named to the All-Conference Team with Katie O’Boyle and Kelsea Prieels earning honorable mentions.
Junior varsity participation certificates went to Leah Newman, Lauren Shaul, Sara Schwartkopf, Zoe Van Dyke, Hanna Kautz, Morgan Smith, Alyssa Zwickl, Jalen Erikson, Destinie Savala, Isabella Gonzales and Nicki Gonzales.

The freshman team was also honored at the banquet as they were led by Coach Whitney Roth to an 11-10 record this season. Earning participation certificates were Becky Boyd, Mykel Garcia, Jocyeln Nuss, Whitney Kleich, Mariah Conn, Courtney Conn, Brianna Eckerberg, Sydney Havengar, Joslyn Olsson, Kaycee Schmidt, Keltie Imus, Kourtney Schanaman and Jade Melroy.

Special awards to freshman players are: Block Party – Joslyn Olsson; Hardest Hitter– Courtney Conn; Setting the Pace – Jocyeln Nuss; Passing it Up – Kourtney Schanaman; Helping Hand – Brianna Eckerberg; Most Improved – Keltie Imus.

The future remains bright for Gering as there are plenty of experienced underclassmen ready to take over the game next year.
