GERING — First-year head coach JJ Behrens is excited about the possibilities for the Gering Bulldogs this year. With 10 returning starters and a handful of talented underclassmen, Behrens is taking the helm of a historically strong program which finished fourth at the district tournament last year. He will be assisted in coaching by Trever Staman and Willie Schwartzkopf.
Work ethic and skill is what Behrens is counting on for the Bulldogs to carry though the season. Since last February, the core of the squad has invested extra time and off-season training, reaching the goal of wrestling over 400 off-season matches in preparation for the 2013-2014 season.

Returning for the Bulldogs are three state qualifiers. Junior Bailey Hort amassed a record of 36-9 at 113 pounds last year en route to a third place finish at the state tournament. Senior Elijah Timblin, at 170 pounds, is eyeing a strong finish to his prep wrestling career, building on his 30-15 record and junior Christian Pester is expecting to be a powerhouse for the Bulldogs at 195 pounds. Other returning starters are seniors Damian Hort, who will be working to best his previous season record of 21-10, Johnathan Sayaloune, Blake Rains and Kelsey Huston and juniors Marcelino Ramos and Quentin Timblin.

Gering earned several individual wins during their opening duals held Dec. 7 in Torrington, Wyo. Those match wins included in dual action against Chadron: Marcelino Ramos at 120 pounds, Baily Hort at 132 pounds, Damian Hort at 145, Elijah Timblin at 170. In dual action against Glenrock, Wyo., match wins came from Marcelino Ramos at 120, Damien Alsidez at 145, Johnathan Sayaloune at 182 and Blake Rains at 195 pounds.

The Bulldogs will host Cheyenne East this Thursday, Dec. 12 for a JV and Varsity dual before traveling to Cheyenne on Saturday, Dec. 14 where the Varsity will compete in the Cheyenne East Invitational.
