Mitchell girls’ basketball coach Brock Ehler knows his squad is up against some stiff competition this season but is confident that the Lady Tigers can go the distance with a group of talented returning starters. Playing in the Class C-1 ranks, Mitchell competes in both the Western and Western Trails conferences. Assistant coaches are Marty Gillen and Rod Ehler.

Looking to improve on last season’s 13-11 record and a Western Trails Conference Tournament trophy, Coach Ehler is asking returning starters Taylor Peters, Aspen Reifschneider and Kady Lower to play key leadership positions. Juniors McKenna Zulkoski and Felina Blanco are also falling nicely into the rotation. Junior Barbara Pieper and freshman Celeste Cardona have also provided some keys plays in the Tiger’s early season games.

Continuity is what Ehler likes about his squad. With a strong roster of juniors, the coach and team know that any success from this season will only go toward building a powerhouse program in the future. Mitchell has garnered some early season success playing the larger schools in the season-opening Western Conference Tournament Dec. 5-7 where Mitchell notched a 44-41 win over Alliance before holding off Gering 37-36 on Dec. 12. These two early-season wins will help set the pace for the Tiger’s season going into tournament time in January and February.

Mitchell has two home games this weekend, on Friday, Dec. 20 with Southeast and Saturday, Dec. 21 with Morrill before taking their holiday break. Their court action will reconvene Jan. 2-3 when they travel to Alliance for the two-day Holiday Tournament before heading south to match up with the Kimball Longhorns on Jan. 7.
