The Mitchell boys’ basketball team jumped to a hot start of their 2013-2014 with a rally at the season-opening Western Conference Tournament Dec. 5-7 that left fans and Class C-1 opponents with raised eyebrows. The Tigers are now on their way toward establishing a winning season that will hopefully carry them strong into the Western Trails Conference tournament in February. Mitchell is building on last year’s 10-11 record under first-year coach Jayson Gregory. Gregory is getting coaching assistance from Tanner Long and Shawn Harvey.

The Tigers are led this season by a big class of experienced seniors that include guard Bo McVay, guard Jamie Fegler, guard Adam Schlotthauer and Nick Harriger playing a strong post position. All four of these seniors were recognized last season among the Western Trails Conference as either All-Conference or All-State honorees. Fellow seniors include Zack Pieper as another imposing post, Nacho Rocha, Garret Braman and Brad Gillen. Other returning starters include juniors Alex Morales and Antonio Barrios.

Thanks to a large class of seniors that brings a lot of size and experience, Gregory is looking forward to the season with high expectations. He plans to capitalize on sharp rebounding and stepping up a defensively aggressive game. Mitchell will match up against noted leaders in the Western Trails Conference including Gering, Chadron and Ogallala.

Mitchell will have to home-court match-ups this weekend before going into the holiday break. On Friday, Dec. 20 they will host Southeast from Yoder, Wyo. and on Saturday, Dec. 21 they will host neighboring Morrill. The Tigers will be back in action Jan. 2-3 with the Alliance Holiday Tournament.
