Seacats’ performance strong in Omaha

Photo by Sheila Weber/for the Citizen - Gering sophomore, Seacat Jon Hastings (pictured competing in the breaststroke at the Scottsbluff Invitational Meet) earned fourth place in the event last weekend at the Omaha Westside Invitational. Hastings led the Seacat boys in performance at the meet, which included some of the largest schools in the state.
Scottsbluff/Gering swimming and diving coach Mike Hayhurst calls the Omaha Westside Invitational the Seacats’ toughest meet of the regular season and only behind the state championships themselves.

So the Seacats’ places in team and event races are not necessarily reflective of how Scottsbluff/Gering competed in the meet, which began Friday with diving and continued Saturday with the swimming races.

“I thought we swam pretty well for this meet,” said Hayhurst, whose boys finished the tough field in eighth place and the girls were 10th in their division.

“It’s a tough meet to swim fast at, but we swam a lot of best times, and that’s everybody from our new kids all the way to our state kids. It’s the toughest meet we have all year other than state.”

While no Scottsbluff/Gering entry won any event titles, two individuals and one relay earned secondary state-qualifying times.

In the girls’ 200-yard freestyle, both Cierra Weatherfield and Emily Yanke posted secondary times while finishing back in the loaded field. Weatherfield finished 15th in a time of 2:10.27 and Yanke was 21st in 2:13.98.

The boys’ 400 freestyle relay also earned a secondary qualifying time with its time of 3:40.51. The time from Ian Galindo, Zach Puckett, Tito Garcia, and Baylen Smith was good for seventh place in the meet.

The Seacats’ top individual performance of the meet came from Jon Hastings in the 100-meter breaststroke. Hastings swam to a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 1 minute, 7.56 seconds.

Senior diver Noah Miller placed fifth with a final score of 324.4 points. Miller stands as the Seacats’ only automatic state qualifier with one regular-season meet remaining on the schedule, the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference Championships at Splash Arena in Scottsbluff on Feb. 14 and 15.

“He missed his best score by half a point, even with a fail dive,” Hayhurst said of Miller, who had to compete after the Seacats’ snowy travel on Friday put them behind in arriving to Westside. “He was diving really well. He didn’t get done diving until almost 11 o’clock (Friday) night.”

In other results, Galindo swam to a pair of individual medals. The freshman placed eighth in the 100 freestyle in 54.11 seconds and finished ninth in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.50.

The Seacat girls’ 400 freestyle relay of Vanessa Woolsey, Rebekah Rawlings, Yanke, and Weatherfield finished seventh in 4:04.93.

In the team standings, the Seacat boys ended eighth with 110 points. Millard West won the team title with 502. The Seacat girls finished 10th with a score of 58 in their division, won by Millard North with 426.

The Seacats will have an intra-squad meet and senior recognition on Friday at Splash Arena before they wrap the regular season with the GNAC meet.
