Bayard's Dechant wins Class C state long jump

Bayard Senior Amanda Dechant began a triple state medal performance at the Class C Track and Field Championships by posting the only victory in the field events among tri-county qualifiers.
Dechant bounded for 16 feet, 10-1/4 inches to win the long jump, adding 3-1/4 inches to her personal best mark and scoring her first state medal in three qualifications at state.
Dechant also medaled in the discus throw with a fifth-place finish mark of 116-9. Dechant was a fourth-place discus finisher as a junior.
Dechant then joined freshman teammate Breanna Korell, sophomore Alicia Conklin and junior Katie Fibelstad for a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. The Tigers' time was 51.532 seconds, just .037 second behind Heartland's winning time.
Bayard finished tied for ninth in the Class C girls' team standings with 22 points. Shelton finished a tight three-way battle for the championship with 47 points, while Laurel-Concord was one point back in second and Tri County third with 45.
Bridgeport senior Nichole Haas scored three team points for the Bulldogs, who thus finished tied for 39th. Haas finished seventh in the discus at 115-6 on Friday and scored an eighth-place finish in the shot put Saturday with a mark of 37 feet, 1/2 inch.
Bayard also had the top area performer from Class C boys' action, with junior Brandon Stuart picking up three state medals.
Stuart finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 13-6 and eighth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.237 seconds.
Stuart ran the second leg of Bayard's eighth-place 4x100 relay, running behind senior leadoff Mikah Schmall and ahead of freshman Brandon Bowers and senior Spencer Jobman in 45.060 seconds. The Tigers compiled six team points to finish tied for 36th place.
Morrill 's 4x100 relay team finished in second, with the quartet of junior Larry Uttecht, senior Jakob Sokol, sophomore Taylor Lackey and junior Nathan Rice turning in a time of 44.602 seconds behind Garden County's victorious effort. Morrill thus tied for 28th with eight points.
Bridgeport sophomore Cody Franklin finished fifth in the 3,200 meters in 10:00.333. Franklin's four points put the Bulldogs in a tie for 42nd place.
Hastings St. Cecelia won the Class C state team title with 42 points, with Oakland-Craig and Tri-County tied for second with 37 points apiece.
