MINATARE – Despite being one of the smaller schools in the region, Minatare boasts a large track team. This year twenty students are a part of the track team. While there are a few younger students this season, many are returners.

“It’s nice to keep kids out in the same sport,” said head coach Matt Korkow. Out of the 20 members of the team, there are three throwers and the rest comprised of runners. From sprinters to jumpers, the team has a wide but strong variety of competitors. “Not so much for long distance this year,” said Korkow.

Korkow has high hopes for his team this season. Two state qualifiers are returning this season. Sophomore Mario Sanchez went to state last year. He is a sprinter and competes in the 100 and 200. Senior Tylor Grumbles, who also went to state for discus, will be returning this season. Keep an eye out for freshman Franki Doty. Korkow feels that Doty has the potential for a very successful high school track career. As an eighth grader, she ran a 5:03 mile. Along with these individuals, Korkow sees great potential in his 4x100 team this year. “It will be interesting to see how the season turns out,” said Korkow, “I hope we can get more than three kids to state this year.”
