Distance runners to lead Bearcats on the track and field

SCOTTSBLUFF — The Scottsbluff boys’ track team was last year’s state runner-up to Elkhorn South. The team has lost several of the key members from last year but the bright spot is two top distance runners, senior Ben Willis-Teff and junior Matthew Barraza. Willis-Teff brought a fourth place medal home last year in the 800 and was a leg on the winning 4x800 relay with Barraza. As an individual, Barraza placed 4th 3,200 run and 5th in 1,600 at state.

Also expected to contribute points to the Bearcat’s team is senior Daniel Rohrer in the hurdles and senior distance runner Brendan Taedter, junior distance runner Shane Burkey, and sophomore Ben Heggem in the long sprints.

The Scottsbluff girls’ team, who finished 8th as a team at the 2013 state meet, is returning with a lot of strong seniors and underclassmen state medalists. Sophomore Chesney Walker is coming off of a stellar freshman year as a state medalist, placed 5th in both the 100 highs and 300 low hurdles last year. Junior Taylor Muncie was a state medalist in the fourth in 3,2000 and seventh in 1,600, and senior SteaVen Becker 14th in the discus. Other solid returning letter winners are senior pole vaulter Savannah Menghini, sophomore sprinter Shanell Primes and junior hurdler Kyra Willats.
