Photo by Kay Grote/Gering Citizen - Gering athletes had a good showing at the Binfield Invitational held Saturday in Scottsbluff. Two of the five meet records broken were by Gering runners. Senior Ryan Schwartzkopf set the new mark in the 400 Meters in a time of 49.25. Schwartzkopf later anchored the winning boys 4x400 relay with teammates Dillon DeMott, Caleb Geary and Aaron Pierce.
The Binfield Invitational 2014 track meet was held on Saturday. The meet consisted of four schools, Gering, Scottsbluff, Rapid City Central, and Casper Kelly Walsh. The four schools brought hundreds of athletes and fans to Scottsbluff for a day of record setting competition at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff.

Gering Senior Ryan Schwartzkopf knocked off another meet record in the 400 meter run. Schwartzkopf completed the one-lap run in 49.25 seconds breaking a meet record. Schwartzkopf is the number one 400 meter boys runner in Class B.

Gering Freshman Rebekah Rawlings knocked off her own meet record in the two-lap 800 meter run in a time of 2:24.73. This places Rawlings at number three in the Class B girls for this event. Rawlings helped win the 4x400 relay and placed first in long jump at 15-06.

Scottsbluff junior Matthew Barraza set a meet record in the long distance eight-lap 3200 meter run, about two miles. Barraza finished with a time of 10:16.39 which leaves in first place in Class B boys for this event.

Steven Juarez of Gering captured a first in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:55.67. Gering Dillon DeMott earned first in the 300 meter hurdles at 42.51. The Gering 4x400 relay consisting of Ryan Schwartzkopf Dillon DeMott, Caled Geary, and Aaron Pierce picked up the first place at 3:29.88.

Scottsbluff girl Shayleigh James earned first in the 400 meter run timed at 1:03.73. Taylor Muncie of Scottsbluff won the girls 3200 meter in 12:49.42. Scottsbluff’s Chesney Walker snagged two first places in the hurdles 100 meter at 15:48 and 300 meters at 48.57. The Gering 4x400 girls Relay team consisting of Kaylee Bohnsack, Katie O’Boyle, Rebekah Rawlings and Shae Kaus earned the first place timed at 4:22.96.

In field events Scottsbluff’s SteaVen Becker swept the girls throwing events. Becker heaved the shot put to a 38 feet 9 inch distance and sailed the discus to 125’ 4” distance. Scottsbluff throwing Coach Warren Osborn said “for the first outdoor meet I saw some good things and some things that we need to work on. There are kids tying up loose ends from other things that are going on in school so practice is up and down in attendance so I am pretty pleased with how things look today.” Osborn spoke specifically of SteaVen Becker. “She is a senior and there is still room for improvement, she is one of them that is tying up loose ends.”

Gering head track coach Randy Plummer said “I thought our boys and girls competed well. The competition was very tough for early in the season and I thought our kids accepted the challenge. Next week we go to North Platte and it will be similar competition with eastern Nebraska Class A schools. For our first outdoor meet of the season, all of the coaches were pleased with the effort and results.”

Scottsbluff’s Alexis Lynn won the pole vault at 7-06.
