Bayard returns strong core team

BAYARD — The Bayard High School Boys Golf team opened its season on April 1. Coach Jim Roberts has 10 golfers out this season and said he anticipates that his team will place well in all of the tournaments this season. One his top returning seniors is Trae Blanco, who signed last week to golf at Midland University next year. He is anticipating some good scores from foreign exchange student Roman Konvicka, who is a Czech national champion.

This year marks Roberts' 23rd year of coaching golf for the Tigers and said he was very pleased with how his squad performed last season up until the final match. "We won all of our meets except for one and that was at districts where we finished in fourth place. That was very disappointing," Roberts said.

He said they return a good group of golfers as the only one not returning is Tyson Schmunk, who graduated last May.

"He was not only a good golfer and contributor to the team, but he was a good leader and will be missed,” he said.

Regarding the outlook for the season, Roberts said they will concentrate on getting scores each time, but that the main focus will be performing strong at districts.

He said there are many strong golfers in the Western Trails Conference but that he expects especially strong performances from teams in the valley.

"I believe our major competition will be Mitchell and Bridgeport," he said.

In addition to the WTC, golfers from the Minuteman Athletic Conference, will also be at many of the meets and Roberts said he doesn't know what to expect of the teams since this is the first year Bayard has been part of the MAC.
