Mitchell golfers win Bayard title

The Mitchell Tigers placed three golfers in the top nine Tuesday in the season-opening Bayard Invitational boys’ tournament at Chimney Rock Golf Course.

Mitchell had a four-man score of 355 to edge Bayard by two strokes. Bridgeport followed in third at 369. Morrill was 10th at 437 in the 14-school field.

Peyton Briggs led Mitchell’s charge with a fourth-place round of 80 (37-43), with teammate Luis Panduro taking fifth at 85 (40-45). Bo McVay took ninth for the Tigers with his 90 (40-50). Dereon Betancur rounded out Mitchell’s four-man count at 100 with a matching pair of 50s.

Kimball’s Henry Heeg edged out defending tourney champion and Bayard senior Trae Blanco 77 to 78 for medalist honors. Blanco was followed by Tiger teammate Roman Konvicka at 80, winning the third-place medal on a tie break.

Heeg had the day’s only pair of sub-40 rounds with his 39 going out and 38 coming in. Blanco had a 37 at the turn to tie Briggs for lowest front-nine score, but Blanco but finished the back nine with a 41. Konvicka, who began with a 43, had a low back-nine count of 37.

Scottsbluff opened its season and Gering had its second tournament of the year at the Sidney Invitational on Tuesday. Efforts to obtain the meet’s results, however, were unsuccessful by press time.
