A nine-run, seventh-inning rally Sunday lifted the Westco Twin Cities Zephyrs Senior American Legion baseball team to a 21-16 slugfest of a victory over host Greeley, Colo., in the first game of a doubleheader.

Greeley’s offense remained intact for the second game while its pitching held Westco Twin Cities to six hits in taking a 14-2 victory.

The doubleheader split followed the rainout of a scheduled home doubleheader Friday for the Zephyrs against Fort Morgan, Colo. The two teams will play a twin bill Sunday in Fort Morgan, beginning at 3 p.m., and the make-up double dip will be Monday at Cleveland Field starting at 5 p.m.

Other action this week for Westco Twin Cities includes a Tuesday game at Chadron, a home doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. and a noon twin bill Saturday at home against Spearfish, S.D.

After the two doubleheaders against Fort Morgan, the Zephyrs will play at Gering Platte Valley Companies next Wednesday, with the senior teams’ game scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

In its opener against Greeley, Twin Cities started hot by scoring three runs in the first inning, five in the second and two in the third in building a 10-6 lead. Greeley, however, caught fire as well, scoring two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 16-12 lead.

Westco then responded in the seventh, tying the score at 16-all. Andy Van Amburg then hit a single that scored Robbie Cantril and Trevor Garcia. Van Amburg finished the game with two runs batted in.

Three Zephyrs finished with three hits: Jackson Hinze, Ty Benson and Cantril. Traceten Halley scored four runs, and Hinze and Benson each had three. Hinze and Matt Mickey each had three RBI, while Benson and Caleb Geary each had two. Geary had a home run.
Leighton Freeze earned the pitching win for Twin Cities.

In the second game, the Zephyrs’ Beau Lofink went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Benson also had two hits and scored one run. Also collecting hits for Westco were Jacob Schmid and Tristan Donelson. Donelson also had an RBI.

Mickey took the pitching loss.
