During the 2014 West Nebraska All-Star game held on June 14, the West made an exciting win after coming back from behind to take the victory with a final score of 26-19.

The West team was filled with many local players including Justin Brester, Blake Frye, Gage Smith and Elijah Timblin of Gering; Andrew Aratani, Beau Lofink and Cameron Presher of Scottsbluff; Adam Schlotthauer of Mitchell; Jake Reader of Kimball; Richard Kadayso of Bayard; and Kaleb DeCora, Jaime Gonzalez and Brandon Nichols of Bridgeport.

The first quarter started out pretty quick with both teams scoring their first touchdowns to make it a tie game right off the bat at 6-6. However, the second quarter was relatively slow besides the touchdown ran in by Zac Jones at the 20 yard line leaving the game at 13-6 going into halftime.

West head coach Derek Deaver was pleased with his team’s performance during the first half and wasn’t the least bit disappointed going into the final half.

“During the first half, the offensive line did a great job. The middle linebackers played awful well too,” Deaver said.

As the third quarter took off, Justus Wallin made a sack causing a fourth down for the East. Towards the end of the quarter, quarterback Tristin Stein threw a pass which ended up being intercepted with 4:30 left on the clock, leaving the East in position to score but, in the end, the team settled for nothing.
Once the fourth quarter got started, things really started to heat up for the evening game. The East forced a fumble right away but recovered it back fairly quickly. However, back-to-back fumbles took place and the second time Tristen Jackson recovered the ball for the West.

The ball was quickly intercepted back for the East where a touchdown was ran in leaving the score at 19-6 with the East on top. Gage Smith answered back for the West running in a touchdown and scoring a field goal soon after to bring the game to 19-13 with 6:30 left in the game.

Holding onto hope, the West ended up grabbing another touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Gage Smith’s field goal was blocked by the East which left the game tied at 19-19. With 20 seconds left on the clock, the West makes it to the eight yard line. With the play in motion, Logan Lewis ran the touchdown in on the left side, sneaking past the East and scoring for the West bringing the team ahead now at 25-19. Gage Smith finished out the game by kicking in the field goal resulting in the final score of 26-19 in a comeback victory for the West.

On the East team, the award for the Offensive Player of the Game was given to Dakota McBride of McCook. Logan Lewis of Sidney took the same award for the West. Justus Wallin of Chase County was named the Defensive Player of the Game for the West while Tanner Evertson from Cozad took the same honor for the East team.
