Photo by Sheila Weber/Sheila Weber Photography - During the All-Star Volleyball game on June 14, West player Makayla Castro makes a spike against two East blockers.
The West Nebraska All-Star volleyball match was held on June 14 at WNCC Cougar Palace with the East defeating the West 4-1. A decent crowd filled the stands and watched the best volleyball players in the region take to the court for what will be the last time for many of them.

The first set looked good for the West as they won 25-20. The rest of the match was all East as they won the last four sets 25-17, 25-19, 25-16, 15-11. The West never had a lead in any of the final four. This is the second year in a row that the East has won after a seven year win streak by the West.

“I had a lot of fun coaching this team; of course we wish we would have come out on top,” West head coach Renee Rediger said. “It was nice to get to know these girls for a good cause. They played hard and it just did not fall for us today.”

The West MVP was Abbi Porter of Sidney and the East MVP was Brittany Lawrence. Porter had 14 kills to contribute to the West effort. Lawrence is from North Platte Saint Patrick’s High School and is signed to play volleyball for Creighton University in Omaha this year. Lawrence led the match with 15 kills and 4 blocks.

Scottsbluff’s Makayla Castro had a good game with 5 kills, 6 digs, and 2 serving points. Gering’s Savannah Walker added to the effort for the West with 6 kills. Bayard’s Megan Stuart contributed six kills. Mitchell’s Taylor Peters added five kills.
