Legion seniors see 6-game winning streak

The Gering Platte Valley Companies Senior Legion team enjoyed success during the week with a 6-game win streak from Tuesday to Sunday. Gering ended the week with an 18-13 record.
Gering took on Alliance at home on Wednesday and won 13-3. The game started slow with Alliance getting the first run in the second inning. Gering answered in the third with two runs when Nate Ferreyra hit a single and batting in Nic Bibb and Brent Barge.

Gering waited until the fourth to score again when Bibb batted in Walker Britsch and Austin Reynolds. Nate Ferreyra was hit by a pitch with bases loaded Bibb walked home. Esai Hernandez batted in Barge, then Logan Conn hit a double sending Dillon DeMott and Hernandez home.

Alliance picked up two more runs in the 5th and Gering snagged one when DeMott hit a single and sent Barge home. Gering earned some insurance runs in the 6th as Hernandez, Conn, Britsch and Reynolds all scored.

Justin Brester took the win on the mound allowing 5 hits, 3 walks and 1 strikeout. Gering batters were busy as Hernandez, DeMott, Bibb earned 2 hits, Reynolds, Britsch, Conn and Nate Ferreyra had 1 hit each.

On Thursday the Gering Seniors took on Chadron and earned an impressive come from behind 14-12 after facing a 10-2 deficit at the top of the fourth. Chadron scored first in the 1st inning and Gering did not answer until the 3rd when Hernandez singled and sent DeMott and Nate Ferreyra home. Chadron answered with 7 runs in the 4th, and 3 in the top of the 5th.

Gering got on its game in the bottom of the 5th with a total of 8 runs scored by Barge, DeMott, Reynolds, Hernandez, Nate Ferreyra, Quentin Timblin, Brester and Britsch. Gering was still down one run at 11-10. Gering defense kept Chadron out of the game in the 6th and then the offense took off again scoring 4 runs by Conn, Nate Ferreyra, Quentin Timblin and Brester to seal the deal. Chadron made one more run in the top of the 7th but it was not enough to overcome Gering.

Pitching duties were shared by Nick Ferrerya and Hernandez. Nick Ferrerya pitched 3.1 innings 1 strike out, 3 walks, and 8 hits. Hernandez pitched 3.2 innings with 4 each on strikeouts, hits and walks. In the batter’s box Barge and DeMott had 3 hits each, Nate Ferrerya had 2, and Reynolds, Nick Ferrerya, Britsch and Hernandez had one.

On Friday the Gering Seniors traveled to Sidney for a tournament and started out by beating Buckley 6-4. Buckley drew first blood with 1 run in the 2nd inning. Buckley followed up with 2 more runs in the 3rd and 1 in the 5th.

Gering finally took over on offense with 5 runs in the 5th. Barge singled to left field and sent Brester home, DeMott batted in Bibb, and then Barge scored after an error on a reach by Nate Ferrerya. Hernandez got a hit and sent DeMott and Nate Ferrerya home. Buckley never scored again and Gering picked up 1 more run in the 6th when Brester scored on an error.

Reynolds got the win on the hill with 4 strikeouts, and allowed 9 hits, and three walks. Gering earned 8 hits with 2 by Barge and 1 each from Bibb, DeMott, Brester, Conn, Nate Ferrerya and Hernandez.

On Saturday the Gering Seniors continued to roll with a 17-1 defeat of Hershland at Sidney. Gering took command of the game in the top of the first scoring 4 runs by DeMott, Ferrerya, Hernandez, and Brester. Hershland scored their only run of the game in the first inning. Gering picked up four more runs in the 2nd as DeMott, Ferrerya, Reynolds and Brester all crossed the plate.

Gering’s offense remained silent until the 5th inning when 9 runs came across the plate by Barge, DeMott, Ferrerya (2), Hernandez, Britsch, Brester, Quentin Timblin and Bibb. The game ended at the bottom of the 5th after the 10-run rule.

Conn earned the pitching win with 5 strikeouts, 3 hits and 1 walk. In the box 15 hits were made led by Barge with 3, Hernandez, Nate Ferrerya, Brester, Nick Ferrerya, Quentin Timblin all had 2 hits, and Reynolds and Bibb each had 1.

Gering extended their win streak on Sautrday with a 12-1 victory over Gordon. Gering got started early with 3 runs in the first inning. DeMott scored after tagging up on a fly ball. Reynolds scored on a single by Conn and Ferrerya scored on a wild pitch.

Gering added two more to the total when Reynolds crossed the plate after a double by Nate Ferrerya and then Hernendez batted Ferrerya across the plate. Gering stayed quiet until the 4th when Hernandez and Elijah Timblin came home on a single by Britsch.

Gering put the game away in the 5th when Bibb and DeMott ran home after a hit by Nate Ferrerya. Hernandez made a single sending home Reynolds and Nate Ferrerya. Hernandez scored himself after Britsch reached on an error. Gordon got their one run in bottom of the 5th but it was not enough to prevent Gering from taking the victory on the 10-run rule.

Barge earned the win on the plate with 2 strikeouts 1 walk and 6 hits. Reynolds, Nate Ferrerya, Hernandez, DeMott and Britsch all earned 2 hits each, and Conn had 1 run.

Gering also face Torrington Sunday afternoon and earned a 16-6 win to close the tournament. Gering scored 2 in the 1st, 5 in the 3rd, 8 in the 4th and 1 in the 7th. Brester took the win on hill despite giving up 10 hits and 2 walks and no strike outs. Scoring runs for Gering was Reynolds 1, Barge 1, DeMott 2, Quentin Timblin 2, Nick Ferrerya 2, Walker Britsch 2, Conn 2, Nate Ferrerya 2 and Hernandez 2. Hits were 1 for Reynolds, Barge 2, DeMott 2, Quentin Timblin 2, Nick Ferrerya 1 and Hernandez 4.

Gering ended the week with a 19-13 record improved by a 7-game win streak. Gering will have played the Zephyrs in Scottsbluff on Tuesday night and face a home field game against Torrington on Wednesday, and Sidney on Thursday.
