Gering took home the gold during the 11 and under Cal Ripkin Nebraska State Championship held in Sidney on Friday, July 11 through Sunday, July 13. This concluded their games for the summer leaving the team 23-5 for the season.

Gering had a successful season building up to the state tournament with being the champion of three of their regular season tournaments including the May Dayz in Greeley, the Father’s Day Classic in Scottsbluff, and the Big Bang in Casper, Wyo. The team also took runner-up at the 16 team showdown in Greeley.

Coming into state, the first team Gering played was on Friday against Sidney where the team showed their strengths taking the win 15-5. On Saturday, they took on Alliance. Although a tough match, they pulled out the win 5-3.

The final round was against Grand Island, which Gering won with a solid 9-4 taking home the victory. Coach Jamey Balthazor, who has been with the team for three years, couldn’t be more proud of what they have accomplished this season on top of winning state.

“The team started practicing in October so it has been a pretty long season. But it is really impressive to see the commitment these kids had to the game and they are very, very excited to have come out on top at state,” Balthazor said.
