Winners of annual Bicycle Hill Climb
     2014-07-17      By The Gering Citizen
Twenty-nine cyclists, many of them members of the newly formed Western Nebraska Bicycle Club, braved the post-storm debris on a steep grade to leave their mark on the Scotts Bluff National Monument’s summit road early last Saturday morning for the Oregon Trail Days Bicycle Hill Climb. Local riders made a good showing as Rich Gifford of Scottsbluff was the overall winner in the men’s mountain bike class and Morrill native Daren Munroe, now of Des Moines, Iowa, claimed the men’s street bike class. Munroe, who returned for the second year to compete in the event, also took overall event honors with his time of 7:55.

In the ladies division, Gering’s Allison Furby took top honors with the fast time in the women’s mountain bike division of 12:50 while Sarah Stahl of Bellevue won the street bike division and women’s overall title in 10:52. Cathy Eastman of Scottsbluff placed first in her age division of street bike in 12:43.

Furby said the personal challenge of the race was ultimately her reward.

“I’ve only been riding for three years and this is something I wanted to try,” Furby said. “I’m happy because my time was faster than last year’s winning time (in the mountain bike) so it’s a good start.”

Race organizer Larry Massie is stepping down from his duties after 12 years. He said members of the Western Nebraska Bicycle Club will conduct the race next year. Many members were on hand to participate and to learn how the hill challenge is structured.
