Injury forces Arellano out of AAU national track meet

Xavier Arellano, who will be a freshman at Gering High School this fall, had to forgo competing in the AAU Junior Olympics National Track and Field Meet this week because of a recurring knee injury.

Arellano had won two gold medals and one bronze medal at the Minnesota AAU Junior Olympic Region 14 National Qualifier Track and Field Meet in Brooklyn Park, Minn., in June.

Rick Marez, Arellano’s cross country and distance coach, said Arellano ran in the regional qualifier with a knee injury.

“Unfortunately, the issue has worsened,” Marez said. “Xavier chose not to run the national meet so that his knee can rest and he can focus on cross country.”

Arellano had the third-best qualifying time for the national meet in the age 14 boys’ 3,000-meter run, which he 9:59.15.

His qualifying time for the 1,500-meter run was 4:33.04, which put him in the 10th-best national qualifying mark. That time also set the Region 14 meet record by 1.49 seconds.

Arellano also had a top-30 qualifying time in the 800 meters with his third-place regional time of 2:14.84.

But, when injuries are concerned, sometimes a decision to bypass one event to be prepared for possibly bigger and better things.

“He’s worked extremely hard and he’s looking forward to running in high school,” Marez said.

Gering’s cross country season begins on Sept. 5 with the annual Gering Invitational meet at Monument Shadows Golf Course. Practice for cross country begins on Aug 18.
