Ron Walker Mobil DJ wing GGSA 18U softball tournament
2011-07-14      By Pedro Escobar, Citizen Intern
It was a long and competitive season for the Gering Girls Softball Association. The 18U division tournament title took place last week and was the last age group to close out the season.

Ron Walker Mobile DJ had already claimed a spot in the final earlier in the day. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing would be the opposing team, and after beating Schank Roofing earlier in the day to claim the final spot in the championship game, winning the title would be a difficult task.
In order for Benjamin Franklin Plumbing to win the softball tourney, they would need to beat Ron Walker Mobile DJ twice, while Ron Walker Mobile DJ only need one win to declare themselves as the GGSA 18U softball tournament champs.

The action began early with R.W. Mobile DJ getting off to a hot start hitting the ball well and placing batters on base. Despite the good start on offense they were only able to bring in one run taking an early 1-0 lead.

B.F. Plumbing also came out hitting the ball well and was able to establish players on base in scoring position. They scored two runs to take an early lead themselves, 2-1. The second inning would be the beginning of a great turnout for one team and the end for the other.

After a good series in the first inning, the pitching for B.F. Plumbing struggled in the second inning and could not find the box to bring in some strikes and slow down a potent R.W. Mobile DJ offense.

R.W. Mobile DJ continued with great hitting, only this time they made them count by having a five run inning to break open a big 6-2 lead. The struggles continued for B.F. Plumbing on the offensive end and R.W. Mobile DJ’s pitcher Jen Barge finally settled and found her game making it even more difficult for B.F. Plumbing to get some hits.

Throughout the struggles B.F. Plumbing was able to find a way to score one run. It was not much but it was one less run they needed in hopes to get back in the game.

The third inning would not be any different than the second. R.W. Mobile DJ pounded in three more runs to go ahead 9-3. B.F. Plumbing was not able to answer with any runs and that put the team in a deep hole.

R.W. Mobile DJ added two more runs in the fourth inning and was now up 11-3, creating an insurmountable lead. B.F. Franklin never gave up and played hard until the last out, but unfortunately it was not their day to be on the winning side. The final score of the game was 11-3 and Ron Walker Mobile DJ became the GGSA 18U champions and Benjamin Franklin Plumbing was runner up. Congratulations to both teams and also congratulations to Schank Roofing for placing third in the tournament.

It was a great season for all the teams who participated. Gering Girls Softball Association would also like to thank all the 18U sponsors and coaches who were involved and helped make the season a great success.

GGSA would also like to thank Jamy Lawson and all the umpires who volunteered to help officiate the games.
