SIDNEY —Scottsbluff is replacing three starters from last season’s Class B state championship girls’ golf team, but the Bearcats got off to a good start to this year’s schedule by placing second in the season-opening Sidney Invitational on Tuesday at Hillside Golf Course.

Scottsbluff carded a 394 in the first tournament of the season. Ogallala edged the Bearcats by a single stroke for top honors by shooting a 393. Sidney followed in third with a 401 and Gering finished fourth with a 420.

Scottsbluff was paced by its two experienced returners. Senior Jordan York shot an 80 to finish second and junior Hannah Holloway fired an 86 to place third. York finished five shots back of Ogallala’s Maaika Mestl, the individual medalist with a 75.

The tournament was the first varsity competition for Scottsbluff’s other three golfers. Rachel Hancock finished with a 111, Jocelyn Bruner had a 117 and Shelby Poynter ended with a 132.

Gering senior Sam Rahmig followed right behind the Bearcats’ medalists in fourth with a 92. Rahmig placed seventh at last year’s state tournament.

Also for Gering, senior Jasie Beam shot a 102 to medal in 10th place. Other Bulldogs and their scores were Jaylen Beam with a 110, Baily Kreider at 116 and Allysa Hoagland with a 125.

Scottsbluff, Gering and Sidney will return to the Hillside course Friday for the Western Conference Tournament. Joining them will be Alliance, Chadron and Mitchell.
