Young but experienced is a good way to describe this year’s Scottsbluff varsity volleyball team. The Bearcats return three starters and three other letter winners from an 11-22 season.
“We are young grade-level wise, with just one senior, but we have a lot of girls returning who got a lot of varsity experience last year,” second-year Scottsbluff coach Kenna (Hubbard) Urwiller. “And we have some young girls who are going to step into some big roles.”
That one senior, setter Kyra Willats is a third-year starter who brings in an average of 15.5 assists and two kills from her junior season.

Junior outside hitter Chesney Walker also will start for the third year and averaged 6.8 kills in earning Western Conference honorable mention kudos and all-Twin City Invitational and GNAC first-team honors.

Junior middle hitter Ally Camacho is also a returning starter, averaging three kills and two ace blocks per game as a sophomore.
Other returning letter winners include junior outside hitter Kelli Wentz, who had 2.6 kills per game. Also back are junior right-side hitter Stacea Pauli, junior middle-outside hitter Anna Yanke and sophomore middle hitter Avery Krentz.

Varsity newcomers include sophomore setter/right-side hitter Sally Welsh, sophomore defensive specialist Alli Leever and junior defensive specialist Tiffany Elder, a transfer from Cheyenne.
“We have some girls who are really stepping up and that’s kind of what we were expecting and needing coming into this season,” said Urwiller, who is optimistic based on successes seen in preseason
workouts and a scrimmage last week.

“I think we have a group of girls who are competitive and they go into every game expecting to win,” Urwiller said. “Hopefully we will build upon the things we grew on last year and hopefully we build upon the things we grew on last year and we’ll just continue to make progress throughout the season.”

The Bearcats begin their season tonight (Thursday) with a match at Alliance before they travel to Gillette, Wyo., for the Camel Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Scottsbluff’s home opener is Tuesday against Cheyenne East, followed by a trip to Cheyenne Central next Thursday.

“We play a tough schedule and I think that’s probably our biggest challenge throughout the season,” Urwiller said, adding that a key factor, “I think, just for us it’s just going to be consistency.”
