Citing returning players as a strength for the Lady Lions volleyball team head coach Kaiya West did concede the team was still going to be young this season.

“We have some experience with junior Leanne Sherrod and returning hitter Jessica Howey,” West said, “but we also have several new freshman on the team.”

West said everyone was working on fundamentals and that practice was going well as they prepare for the season.

West said the team did not have any returning seniors with any varsity experience this year. “Our lone senior is Traci Sinner,” she said. “Our returning juniors are LeAnne Sherrod – middle hitter, Laurissa Gonzales – libero, and Erika Derr – outside hitter.”

West the team leaders were Gonzales and Sherrod but also noted sophomores Jessica Harvey and Shayln Lackey.

“Our team is filled with natural competitors,” West said. “These girls want to improve their skills and become the best players they can be. They are a close-knit group that get along great, push each other, motivate each other, and want to improve together as a team.”

West said the team’s main strength was in offense and the girls were working on defensive transitioning.

“The majority of the players who will the court will be underclassmen. We have opportunities for young players to step up into big leadership roles this season.”

West said the team is growing and learning and that much of that learning curve will take place during the first game.

“I think we have a lot of potential,” West said. “We have some outstanding athletes who are excited about the game at a higher level but what really impresses me is everyone has such good attitudes. There is some enthusiasm and spirit.”
