Gering spikers finish strong in Gillette tourney

The Gering and Scottsbluff volleyball teams both had successful efforts in the Camel Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyo.

After posting a 1-2 record in pool play on Friday, the Bulldogs earned wins in two of their three matches Saturday in the bronze bracket. Gering started Saturday with a 25-21, 25-21 victory over Glenrock and then toppled Cheyenne South 25-16, 22-25, 25-18.

Gering (3-3) continued to battle tough in the championship match but came up just short against Gillette in three tough sets (25-22, 29-31, 32-30).

In Gering’s win over Glenrock, Allie Boggs made eight kills, nine set assists and three ace serves; Kaylee Spreier had seven kills; Jade Riedel finished with three kills; Abby Kiesel ended with three kills; Brooklyn Perez had 13 set assists; Kaila Borgman contributed two blocks; and Lauren Shaul had two ace serves.

Against Cheyenne South, Boggs put down six kills and had 21 set assists; Riedel had five kills; Kiesel finished with four kills; Spreier piled up 16 kills and five ace serves; and Perez had 11 set assists and three ace serves.

In the Bulldogs’ last match Saturday against Gillette, Spreier had 13 kills and four blocks; Kiesel had six kills; Boggs registered three kills, four blocks, and 19 set assists; Shaul had three kills; Borgman added three blocks; and Perez had nine set assists.

Scottsbluff began its season Thursday with a dual at Alliance, which the host Bulldogs won in three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-23.

Gering’s next action will be in the Bulldogs’ first home match, today (Thursday) against Chadron. Varsity play is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Gering then in the Bulldog Triangular at North Platte on Saturday, with the third Bulldogs team from Alliance. Gering then plays at Scottsbluff on Tuesday at about 6:30 p.m.

At the Camel Tournament, Scottsbluff finished the two days with a 4-2 record and came in third place in the silver bracket.

On Friday, the Bearcats defeated Glenrock 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 and Laramie 25-19, 25-18 before losing to Green River 25-20, 25-18. Scottsbluff’s 2-1 pool play record earned it the No. 1 seed in the silver bracket.

In Saturday’s matches, Scottsbluff opened the day with an 18-25, 25-23, 25-22 win over Rock Springs and then lost to Big Horn 16-25, 25-23, 23-25. In the third-place match, the Bearcats downed Douglas 25-12, 25-16.

Statistical leaders for Scottsbluff in its win over Glenrock included Chesney Walker collecting nine digs and 11 kills; Alli Leever registering nine digs; Kelli Wentz tallying 10 digs and five kills; Avery Krentz finishing with four digs and three kills; Kyra Willats ending with five digs and 19 assists; Aly Camacho totaling four kills and one block; and Sally Welsh collecting two assists and two kills.

Against Laramie, Wentz had five kills and 10 digs; Leever had eight digs; Willats finished with 10 digs and 19 assists; Walker had seven digs and 11 kills; Krentz had three digs and three kills; Stacea Pauli had two assists and two kills; Welsh added two kills and two assists; and Camacho had four kills.

Against Green River, Willats had 12 assists and four digs; Walker ended with five kills and six digs; Wentz had four kills and six digs; Camacho had four kills; Welsh contributed three assists; Krentz finished with two kills; and Leever had six digs.

In Scottsbluff’s win over Rock Springs, Wentz collected seven digs and six kills; Willats had eight digs, 24 assists, and two kills; Pauli ended with nine digs and eight ace serves; Camacho had six kills; Leever had 10 digs; Walker added four digs and 12 kills; Krentz put down six kills; and Welsh had five assists.

Against Big Horn, Wentz had 21 digs and four kills; Leever had 22 digs and three ace serves; Willats finished with nine digs and 20 assists; Welsh had four kills; Camacho had four digs, seven kills and two ace blocks; Walker had 10 digs and five kills; Pauli had 12 digs; and Krentz had seven digs and four kills.

In Scottsbluff’s last match of the tournament against Douglas, Walker ended with seven digs and five kills; Willats had 15 assists and seven digs; Camacho recorded two kills and two ace blocks; Krentz had three kills; Welsh had three kills and two assists; Leever collected five digs and three ace serves; and Pauli had five digs.

Scottsbluff had its home opener Tuesday against Cheyenne East, which spoiled the Bearcats’ night with a 25-9, 25-18, 25-18 sweep.

For Scottsbluff (4-4) , Wentz had five digs and three kills, Willats made 15 assists with two kills, Camacho had five kills and two ace blocks, Krentz made five kills, one ace block and two digs, and Welsh had two ace blocks with one kill.

The Bearcats opened their season Thursday night at Alliance, falling to the Bulldogs 25-18, 25-15, 25-23. Scottsbluff statistics were unavailable from the match.

Scottsbluff will travel to Cheyenne today to face the Central Indians before the Bearcats entertain Gering on Tuesday. The varsity match is scheduled for first serve at 6:30 p.m.
