Scottsbluff, Gering golfers tie for 2nd in Cheyenne

After two days of play at the Cheyenne Invitational golf tournament last Thursday and Friday, Gering and Scottsbluff found themselves in a second-place tie in the team race at the Cheyenne Airport Golf Club.

Both the Bulldogs and Bearcats finished with three-player gross scores of 573. Casper- Natrona County won the team title with a 495.

With cooler temperatures on Friday, all of the teams shot higher scores in the second round. After opening with a team score of 278 in the first round Thursday, Scottsbluff followed with a 295 on Friday. Gering opened with a 281 and followed with a 292.

Four local golfers medaled by finishing in the top 10 of the individual standings.

Scottsbluff senior Jordan York led the county’s charge by finishing in a tie for third with a two-day total of 168. York opened with a 79 and shot an 89 Friday.

Gering senior Sam Rahmig finished just two strokes behind York in fifth with a 170. Rahmig carded back-to-back rounds of 85.

Other local individual medalists were Scottsbluff junior Hannah Holloway and Gering senior Jasie Beam. Holloway finished sixth with a 179 (88-91), while Beam placed ninth with a 194 (93-101).

Casper Natrona’s Caitlyn Skavdahl won the individual title with a 158. Her teammate Eryn Ellis finished second with a 159.

Two other Gering golfers finished in the top 20. Allysa Hoagland placed 16th with a 213 (107-106) and Bailey Kreider finished in a tie for 17th with a 220 (103-117).

Also for the Bulldogs, Jaylen Beam finished 24th with a 230 (113-117), Amanda Kilthau was 28th with a 248 (121-127), and D.J. Bokelman was 33rd with a 267 (137-130).

Competing in her first varsity tournament, Scottsbluff’s Hailey Sanderson earned a 23rd-place finish with a 229 (114-115). Scottsbluff’s Shelby Poynter followed Sanderson with a 25th-place finish with a 234 (111-123). Karlie Johnson was also playing in her first varsity tournament for the Bearcats and finished 31st with a 251 (126-125).

The Scottsbluff golfers will be at Natrona County’s home meet in Casper today (Thursday) and Friday, while Gering’s next action will be the Bulldogs’ home invitational on Tuesday at Monument Shadows Golf Course beginning at 9 a.m. Gering and the Scottsbluff junior varsity were at Chadron on Tuesday.



Area golf action strong

Bayard finished as the runner-up in the team standings Thursday at the Creek Valley Invitational in Chappell.
Bayard shot a 465 to place second behind Dundy County-Stratton, which claimed the team title with a 422. Bayard senior Tessa Douglas led the Tigers with a seventh-place finish in the individual standings by carding a 104.

Also for the Tigers, Catherine Applegate shot a 110, Maggie Brunmeier had a 119 and Caressa Wolf finished with a 132.

Dundy County’s Rebecca Lorens won the individual title with a winning round of 95.

Bridgeport’s Kassie Marx placed second with a 96 and Mitchell junior Myranda Musfelt followed in third with a 97.

Musfelt’s effort at Chappell came two days after she was the top medalist at the Kimball Invitational last Tuesday at Four Winds Golf Course.

Musfelt ended on top with a 102. Kimball’s Jaycie Walker finished one shot back in second with a 103 and Bridgeport’s Cassidy Mitchell followed in third with a 105.

The Mitchell Invitational is scheduled for today, weather permitting, with Bayard included in the field. Other upcoming tournaments that include area teams are the Gering Invitational on Tuesday and the Scottsbluff Invitational on Sept. 20.
