Candace Smith, in her first year of teaching fourth grade in the Bayard schools, has also been named as the cross country team’s new head coach.

“I ran cross country for Bayard when I was in high school,” she said. “After that, I also competed outside of school. I also coached a running club when I was teaching at Westmoor in Scottsbluff.”

This season’s cross country team has five runners – one senior, one returning junior, a sophomore and two freshmen.

“The group is a very hard working team,” Smith said. “Every workout they’re given they just go out and run and are constantly trying to push themselves and each other. I think that’s going to be great as they go throughout the year. Right now, I couldn’t ask for more. And they’re a great example for our junior high runners.”

She said one of the big meets this year is a regular season visit to Kearney. It should give the team and idea of what the course is like. Kearney is also the site for this season’s state tournament.

“We’ll be visiting a lot of conference schools,” she said “And we’ll be competing in Gering at a very large meet.”

She added her goal is to have the team improve with every single meet, whether it’s their time, strategy of running or anything else that will help them be better runners.

“I’m also hoping that with the improvement, all the members will learn something about themselves,” she said. “And I’d like to see them come back for next year and bring some friends.”

After opening the season at the Gering Invitational, Bayard is on the road for a Sept. 12 meet at Kimball.
