MINATARE — The Indians picked up its first win of the season here last Friday night as the tribe easily handled the Broncos of Wauneta-Palisade, 46-16.

Minatare Assistant Coach Kyle Cotton said the coaching staff was very pleased. “We played very well starting with the opening kickoff and our defense was swarming and really got going,” he said.
Minatare opened the game with a score as Yovan Perez took the opening kick 65 yards for the score. The point after failed, but the
Indians had a 6-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Broncos fumbled the ball and the Indians recovered at the Bronco 27. Josh Cinocco grabbed 14 yards and Perez ran for a first down. Then Perez took the ball and passed it to quarterback Tyler Koke for the score and with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter, giving Minatare a 12-0 lead.

“We really got the momentum going after those first two scores, but we still have some things to clean up, but overall we were very pleased,” said Cotton.

One of the areas Cotton said the team needs to improve upon is reducing the number of penalties. On the defensive side of the ball, Cotton said they were strong and so far, the defense is only allowing 22 points a game, “and in 6-man football, that’s pretty good.”

As the second quarter opened, the Broncos saddled up and trotted down the field ending with a score as Tyler Davis scored from five yards out. Minatare’s offense sputtered in the second quarter and Wauneta-Palisade took advantage of it moving the ball to the Minatare 22, but the Indian defense stepped up and gave the offense another chance with 2:20 remaining in the first half. The Indians went down the field led by Perez, Cinocco and then Juan Garfio scored from nine yards out to give Minatare a 10-point cushion at halftime.

Minatare opened the third period where it left off before halftime with Perez and Garfio running wild and then Koke connected with Dominic Longoria for a 22-yard touchdown. With 7:33 left in the
third period, Minatare had a 26-8 lead.

Wauneta-Palisade continued to have problems offensively as a fumble on its 25 was recovered by Chance McAllister, which set up a two yard score by Javier Guerrero to give the Indians a 32-8 lead with 6:25 left in the quarter.

Wauneta-Palisade added a score as Joseph Sramek ran in for the touchdown, but Minatare had a comfortable 32-16 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Minatare added two more scores in the fourth quarter including another score by Perez and Guerrero. With the win the Indians go to 1-1 on the season and will travel to McPherson County in Tryon with kickoff set for 2 p.m.

Cotton said they don’t know a lot about McPherson County, but that this week the team needs to work on blocking, open-field tackling, “and cleaning up the penalties, along with being more efficient each time we have the ball,” he said.
