Lupher and teammate Jason Doll were moved from the No. 2 and No. 1 singles teams and paired up as the No. 1 doubles team last week, taking second place at North Platte.
After the Sept. 6 Scottsbluff Invite, Gering boy’s tennis coach Justin Reinmuth said he would be changing up some of the positions to improve the team’s performance entering the Sept. 13 North Platte Invitational.

The invite included a 10-team field, with several schools competing in Class A. Participants included Alliance, Gering, Scottsbluff, Lexington, Holdrege, Kearney, McCook, Grand Island, North Platte and Hastings.

Reinmuth said the adjustment paid off as Gering’s No. 1 doubles team took a second place medal at the event. Alex Lupher and Jason Doll, usually Gering’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, teamed up for the No. 1 doubles.

Lupher and Doll started the Saturday event with an 8-4 win over Class A North Platte. They dropped the next match, 8-2, to Hastings, but bounced back with an 8-2 victory over McCook. The match against 7-2 Grand Island was closer, as Lupher and Doll edged out a 9-8 victory to advance to the championship round. The lost the final to Kearney, 8-1.

“Our new No. 1 doubles team finished second, which was the highlight of the day,” Reinmuth said. “Everyone else went 0-4. We got pretty beat up. But we’re a young team and building.”

New players at other positions included Mason Marsh at No. 1 singles and Josh Wilson at No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team was Christian Rogers and Luis Hernandez.

“We probably won’t be making any more changes,” Reinmuth said. “We’ll focus on what we do well and move on from there.”

Gering ended the tournament with 22 team points, tying with Scottsbluff for eighth place.

Scottsbluff’s top finishers were Sean Mercer-Smith in seventh at No. 2 singles and Eric Olsen in eighth at No. 1 singles. Their No. 1 doubles team of Brady Sindt and Soren Mercer-Smith ended up ninth and Owen Parra and Jackson Frank at No. 2 doubles placed seventh.

The Gering and Scottsbluff JV squads were in Alliance Tuesday for a triangular event. Scottsbluff has a home dual against Torrington this evening (Sept. 18), then both Gering and Scottsbluff are in Lexington on Friday for an Invitational.
