Chadron spikers turn back Scottsbluff, win Mitchell Invite

The Chadron volleyball team had a winning three days against Scotts Bluff County opposition last week, first fighting off a stiff challenge visiting Scottsbluff on Thursday for a four-set victory and then sweeping through its competition Saturday to win the Mitchell Invitational championship.

The Cardinals (10-1), who have won nine straight, turned back the Bearcats 25-20, 21-25, 30-28, 25-16 Thursday night.
Then on Saturday, Chadron swept its two pool opponents – downing Hemingford 25-19, 25-14 and Hay Springs 25-16, 25-9 – to earn a berth in the championship match against host Mitchell. The Cardinals prevailed over the Tigers 25-12, 25-7 to win the tournament title.
Mitchell (9-5) had advanced by defeating pool foes Bayard (25-16, 27-25) and Gordon-Rushville (25-21, 26-24).

Bayard finished 0-2 in pool play, also losing to Gordon-Rushville 25-18, 18-25, 25-23 in the day’s only three-set match. The Tigers atoned for themselves in the fifth-place match, downing Hemingford 25-19, 25-23.

Gordon-Rushville defeated Hay Springs for third place, 25-16, 25-17.
Mitchell’s performance came after the Tigers swept Hay Springs and Leyton in a home triangular Thursday night.

In other area action last week, Hemingford swept Banner County 25-12, 25-13, 25-8 at Harrisburg, and Morrill was swept Tuesday at home by Bridgeport, 25-18, 25-13, 25-17.

In its match against Chadron, Scottsbluff was led in hitting by Chesney Walker with 12 kills and Aly Camacho with 11. Also for the Bearcats, Kelli Wentz put down eight kills and Avery Krentz added seven.

Kyra Willats handed out 31 assists from her setter’s position. She also led the Bearcats with three aces. Sally Welsh added five assists.

Camacho had a team-high four blocks for Scottsbluff. Wentz and Willats added two blocks each.
Defensively for the Bearcats, Alli Leever tallied 26 digs. Also in the dig department, Walker finished with 21, Willats had 18, Wentz added 17, Krentz had 10, and Stacea Pauli chipped in with six.
The loss dropped Scottsbluff to 4-8 on the season. The Bearcats traveled to Sidney on Tuesday in preparation for the Twin City Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The Bearcats open play Friday at 4 p.m. against Alliance, continuing with a 5:30 p.m. match against Rapid City Stevens, a 7 p.m. meeting vs. Lexington and an 8:30 dual against Ogallala. All four of the Bearcats’ matches are at the Scottsbluff High School gymnasium.
Gering will play all four of its Friday matches at the Gering High School gymnasium. The Bulldogs take on Sidney at 4 p.m., Grand Island Northwest at 5:30 p.m., McCook at 7 p.m. and Chadron at 8:30 p.m.

The Gering Junior High and Bluffs Middle School gyms will be used as well.

Saturday’s action starts at 9 a.m. with four more pool matches. Semifinals will start at 11 a.m., consolation finals are scheduled for noon and championship finals are set for 1 p.m. starts.
