Scottsbluff goes 1-1 at home tennis triangular

Despite two previous days of heavy rain, the Scottsbluff boys’ tennis team managed to play its home triangular with Gering and Alliance on Tuesday – and came away 1-1 on the night.

Scottsbluff lost the 4-5 opener to Alliance in a match Coach Maddie Burford thought could have been better played. “We were a little slow coming out and we finally started to play our game, the match was over,” she said.

Burford said some of the sluggishness might have been because it’s been about 12 days since the Bearcats have played a dual. But overall, she said it was good warm-up going into this weekend’s GNAC meet in Columbus.

Against Alliance, Scottsbluff’s No. 1 singles Sean Mercer-Smith lost 6-8 and No. 2 singles Eric Olsen won 8-6. Owen Parra lost his No. 3 singles match 5-8 and No. 4 Brady Sindt won a 9-8 on a 7-4 tiebreaker. Soren Mercer-Smith at No. 5 singles took a 9-7 victory and Jackson Frank at No. 6 singles won 8-6.

The No. 1 doubles team of Brady Sindt and Soren Mercer-Smith of lost 3-8. At No.2 doubles, Jackson Frank and Owen Parra also lost 6-8. Patrick Madden and Gunnar Buchhammer at No. 3 doubles lost 3-8.

Scottsbluff won the dual against Gering as No. 1 singles Sean Mercer-Smith won 8-4 over Gering’s Alex Lupher. But No. 2 singles Eric Olsen lost 2-8 to Jason Doll.

In other singles action against Gering, Scottsbluff’s No. 3 Owen Parra won 8-5, No. 4 Soren Mercer Smith won 8-1, and No. 5 Jackson Frank won 8-3

The No. 1 doubles team of Sindt and Soren Mercer-Smith lost 5-8 to Gering’s Lupher and Doll. The No. 2 doubles team of Frank and Parra won an 8-0 sweep. And the No. 3 doubles team of Madden and Buchhammer won 8-4 over Gering’s Mason Marsh and Josh Wilson.

“It was a long night, but I thought the team played well,” Burford said. “I’m glad we got to play before he head out to the GNAC meet.”

Gering dropped both ends of triangular, but Coach Justin Reinmuth said the team played well, although they don’t have a lot of depth. “It’s kind of defeating to end the season with a loss like this, but you roll with the punches.”

Gering now prepares for the state tournament on Sept. 16 – 17 in Lincoln.
