The Scottsbluff boys’ tennis team wrapped up its regular season Oct. 7 with a strong finish on the road against McCook as the team prepares for the state tournament this weekend.

The Bearcats were 3-1 winners over the McCook Bison as both its doubles teams scored victories and split its singles matches.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Brady Sindt and Soren Mercer-Smith were 6-1, 6-3 winners and the No. 2 team of Jackson Frank and
Owen Parra were also 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 winners.

In singles action, No. 1 Sean Mercer-Smith won 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while No. 2 Eric Olsen lost 6-7 (1-7), 2-5.

Scottsbluff Coach Maddie Burford said she will bring the same lineup to the state tournament on Oct. 16 – 17 that she used at the McCook dual.

“We aren’t seeded, but I think we have a pretty good shot at winning the first round,” she said. “We’re not playing a seeded team that day.”

Playing No. 1 singles will be Sean Mercer-Smith and Eric Olsen will be at No. 2 singles. For the doubles teams, No. 1 is Brady Sindt and Soren Mercer-Smith. At No. 2 doubles will be Jackson Frank and Owen Parra.

“The boys are ready and peaking at the right time,” Burford said. “They’re excited and looking forward to seeing how they can do. It’s a whole different ball game once you get there.”
