Bearcat wrestlers look to compete strong again in Class B

Scottsbluff wrestling coach James Miller has six returning state qualifiers this winter from a team that finished third in Class B, and two of those placed at state in 2013 when the Bearcats finished second.

“We’re still really blessed to have the number of experienced kids that we do, so that’s definitely a plus,” Miller said. “The thing is, our green guys are really green and our advanced guys are really advanced. The kids are really receptive and they want to do well.”
Senior 120-pounder Keegan Hessler will be looking for a third state finalist medal come February. Hessler won the 113-pound state championship as a sophomore and finished second at 126 last year.

Hessler also will compete next week in the National Iron Man Championships in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Senior 160-pounder Sabian Harsh will be vying for his third state medal after he placed third as a sophomore and fifth last year, both also at 160.

Sophomore 138-pounder Salem Harsh returns after earning a sixth-place state medal as a freshman at 120 pounds.
Other returning state qualifiers are 106-pound junior George Hernandez, 126-pound sophomore Robert Price and 132-pound sophomore Ben Rodriguez. Senior veteran Keenan Schmidt also returns, competing at 152.

Newcomers include 113-pound freshman Mario Ybarra, 145-pound freshman Elijah Blanco, 170-pound sophomore Kobe Paez sophomore, 220-pound freshman Luke Ferguson and sophomore heavyweight Genuro Gurrola.

“I think we will be really competitive. The nice thing is, even though we lost those seniors last year, our young guys have developed a lot over the summer,” Miller said.

“They put in a lot of time and effort, and we’re really impressed with the way our experienced guys are wrestling and we’re excited about those young guys. They’re coming in right away and they want to contribute, they want to work hard and they have good attitudes. So those are all things that we’re excited to work with.”

Miller and the Bearcats began the season Saturday at the Wizard Duals in Windsor, Colo., a tournament that featured some of Colorado’s toughest teams.
Scottsbluff finished seventh in the 10-team tournament. In pool play, the Bearcats lost 38-35 to Greeley Central, defeated Poudre 39-31, lost to Parker-Legacy 51-27 and lost 57-18 to Thompson Valley.
In the seventh-place match, Scottsbluff rolled past Longmont, Colo., 58-15.

Four Bearcats completed the day with 4-1 records: Hessler, Rodriguez, Salem Harsh and Sabian Harsh. Ybarra went 3-2, while other two-match winners were Hernandez, Schmidt, senior Brenton Riesen, Blanco, Paez and Gurrola.

Scottsbluff will be at Alliance for dual action tonight (Thursday). On Saturday, while Hessler will be in the Iron Man meet, the other Bearcats will compete in the Cheyenne East Invitational.

The Bearcats will be in Gillette, Wyo., for Campbell County’s two-day tourney next weekend, and the Scottsbluff Duals on Jan. 3 will open the post-holiday schedule on the road to the Class B state tournament.
